“A nation that continues year after year
to spend more money on military defense
than on programs of social uplift
is approaching spiritual death.”
-martin luther king jr
memorial day.
a tip o' the hat to all that have given their lives in war.
its sad to think a large percentage of those that have lost their lives in combat (or to friendly fire [see oxymoron]) often did not understand the actual reasons they were shooting at other humans, and if they did, may not have agreed with these so-called justifications. or causes.
nonetheless they are dead for reasons believed to "better" the world for the rest of us.
for this they deserve remembrance. tribute. sympathy.
and yes you can support the troops and oppose the war. and what the fuck is a patriot anyway. far as im concerned its a football team (american) in new england. i think the concept of a patriot. really a patriot. i think that went out of vogue about the same time as powdered friggin wigs.
so lets remember the fallen. with respect and admiration.
and lets really support the troops...
by bringing them home.
pablo picasso, guernica (1937)
recently completed augusten burroughs "possible side effects"
(burroughs doing what he does. damned well. one of a very few writers that make me laugh out loud. often).
also, "bluebirds used to croon in the choir" by joe meno.
(short stories that make you thankful mrs meno gave birth to her son. beautiful touching yet simple prose. read it.)
